Apple Maps vs Google Maps and Preparing for the Switch

URL from a pin drop location emailed from Apple's Maps in iOS 6:

The above URL currently redirects to Google Maps:

Taking a closer look...

Query string parameters from maps.apple.com:

  • lsp=xxxx
    • This was a four digit number, not sure what that meant.
  • auid=xxxx
    • This was a 20 or so digit number, not sure what that meant either, maybe a device identifier?
  • sll=52.376290,4.900797
    • This is the basic lattitude, longitude.
  • q=Hotel%20Prins%20Hendrik%20B.V.
  • hnear=Prins%20Hendrikkade%2082,%20NL-1012%20Amsterdam,%20The%20Netherlands
    • This is the location the user started out at where the query then searches nearby results for.

Query string parameters from maps.google.com contain the same parameter names:

  • sll=52.376290,4.900797
  • q=Hotel+Prins+Hendrik+B.V.
  • hnear=Prins+Hendrikkade+82,+NL-1012+Amsterdam,+The+Netherlands

So, all existing links to places on google maps can simply have "google" replaced with "apple" and you're at the same location on Apple's Maps. Good thinking, nerds.

Lurk More: Work

I'm lucky enough to have a great job in skateboading where I can put to use all the skills like programming and accounting that I've somehow managed to accumulate.
